The Minister Corner
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

Hello God
Submitted by Johanna

Hello God, I called tonight,
To talk a little while.
I need a friend who'll listen
To my anxiety and trial.

You see, I can't quite make it
Through a day just on my own,
I need your love to guide me,
So I'll never feel alone.

I want to ask you please to keep,
My family safe and sound
Come and fill their lives with confidence,
For whatever fate they're bound.

Give me faith, dear God, to face,
Each hour throughout the day
And not to worry over things,
I can't change in any way.

I thank you God, for being home,
And listening to my call
For giving me such good advice
When I stumble and fall.

Your number, God, is the only one
That answers every time
I never get a busy signal,
And never had to pay a dime.

So thank you, God, for listening
To my troubles and my sorrow
Good night, God. I love You, too,
And I'll call again tomorrow!

Cherishing The Way
By Regina

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 “Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, The LORD is One. Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

What do these scriptures mean to you? Are they only applicable to the Israelites of Moses’ time, or do they apply also to today? They start off with saying we should love Yahweh and not only love Her, but love Her with all our heart, our soul and strength. Then they go on to instruct us on what we should do with the commands Yahweh gives us. So what is the tie in?

For me what comes to mind first is how Father is all things and being that She is all things, She is also Her Way. Her Way is the commands that She gives us, the lifesaving instruction that She shares with us and to love Father, is also to love Her Way.

In these scriptures Father encourages us to think about them, ponder them, discuss them and share them with our children and with one another. This shows just how She also wishes that we might understand them rather than just following them blindly. And to understand them, to understand Her Way, is to understand Father Yahweh in all Her glory. This is just one of the many things that I love about Yahweh, because though She asks that we follow Her commands, She also wishes that we learn and grow and understand and share in Her Way because believing in Her is also believing in Her Way, understanding its importance and cherishing it as we cherish Her.

Deuteronomy 6:17-19 “Carefully observe the commands of the LORD your God, the decrees and statutes He has commanded you. Do what is right and good in the LORD’s sight, so that you may prosper and so that you may enter and possess the good land the LORD your God swore to [give] your fathers, by driving out all your enemies before you, as the LORD has said.”

Father is not a dictator. She gives us the freewill choice to follow or not to follow Her commands. But it is not hard to make the right choice when we fully understand that the commands that She asks us to follow are for both our own good and the good of all Creation so that we might live in happiness, love and harmony with one another and all of Her creation.

The parallel in this Scripture is also in how it applies not only to the Israelites of the day and time when Moses led them out of Egypt, but also for today’s day of the End Times as we experience the Tribulation and soon, the Rapture and Armageddon, when our enemies (the wicked of creation, both in the physical and spiritual realms) are driven out (literally driven out of creation via death) and look forward to the establishment of the Kingdom. If we, the spiritual Israelites of today, do what is right now and remain faithful and obedient, we are promised entrance into the Kingdom and if we do what is right then in remembering Father in obedience to Her Way, we are promised Eternity.

Deuteronomy 6:20-25 “When your son asks you in the future, ‘What is the meaning of the decrees, statutes, and ordinances, which the LORD our God has commanded you?’ tell him, ‘We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand. Before our eyes the LORD inflicted great and devastating signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh and all his household, but He brought us from there in order to lead us in and give us the land that He swore to our fathers. The LORD commanded us to follow all these statutes and to fear the LORD our God for our prosperity always and for our preservation, as it is today. Righteousness will be ours if we are careful to follow every one of these commands before the LORD our God, as He commanded us.’

These decrees, statutes, and ordinances are Father’s Way. Currently, those of us on this Earth are slaves to a different Egypt just as the Israelites of the time were literal slaves to Egypt. Father is inflicting great and devastating signs and wonders and making Her name known, but righteousness will be ours if we are careful to follow Her commands.

Within the jigsaw puzzle of The Word is a roadmap to Salvation and we should embrace it. Our cherished Christ Jesus was the physical embodiment of The Way and we embrace him as our Lord and Savior as well. The signs and wonders act as direction on our path and the path leads us home and to Eternity.

These are things that we cherish, not only because they are the promise of life but also because our heavenly Father loves us enough to teach them to us. As we follow in Christ’s footsteps who also followed these commands and came to show us The Way, the Truth and the Light, cherish them, write them upon your heart, share them with your children and talk of them often.

Many Dreams and Futility
submitted by Jeshaiah

Ecclesiastes 5:7 — For many dreams bring futility, also many words. So, fear God.

Proverbs 20:13 — Don't love sleep, or you will become poor; open your eyes, and you'll have enough to eat.

Perhaps it can be easily seen how too much sleep can be a detriment. Excess sleep can actually cause an individual to be more tired, as opposed to feeling refreshed. At the same time, so much time that would be utilized to perform every day work would be taken up by unnecessary sleep.

Proverbs 20:4 — The slacker does not plow during planting season; at harvest time he looks, and there is nothing.

Proverbs 26:14 — A door turns on its hinge, and a slacker, on his bed.

Excess sleep can also provide for excess dreaming, and in the concept of excess dreaming, there can actually be two ideas that may come to mind. First, dreams can be pleasant for some, terrifying for others, perhaps even sought, but if dreaming for pleasure is sought, it can be futile and of no value.

Deuteronomy 28:67 — In the morning you will say, 'If only it were evening!' and in the evening you will say, 'If only it were morning!'—because of the dread you will have in your heart and because of what you will see.

In this way, dreams can become something that are dreaded because of too much of one aspect of one's life that was thrown off balance, and perhaps even spiraling further out of control. And to an extent, that leads onto the next concept, to which there are too many goals, too many fantasies, day dreams, etc. In other words, dreams of excessive hopes for the future, perhaps a life of luxury, or things that do not take part of Father's plans for oneself. Seeking to live a life outside of what Father plans is like not being content with what Father would have, to seek to go off the narrow path (which would be like trying to search for other treasures…which there are none), or to try to add to what Father already would have. These have already been addressed in scripture.

Ecclesiastes 3:14 — I know that all God does will last forever; there is no adding to it or taking from it. God works so that people will be in awe of Him.

Proverbs 19:21 — Many plans are in a man's heart, but the LORD's decree will prevail.

Many dreams can also mean to set expectations of certain things. Or, perhaps, even to take what one dreams, and try to add to it or make it into something that it wasn't. For example, if a person has a dream as they slept about perhaps having a particular meal, and wakes up remembering the dream, thinking on it too much beyond the message and symbolism might lead to seeking the meal in real life, and perhaps setting expectations that it would be just like the dream. Perhaps even adding to the dream to try to make things seem like they could be much better if they added something to the meal. Consider this:

Matthew 19:29 — And everyone who has left houses, brothers or sisters, father or mother, children, or fields because of My name will receive 100 times more and will inherit eternal life.

It is one thing to take a promise that has been made and accept this humbly, but another whole concept to take a promise and add to it, dream about it, or make expectations of it. When Father provides this:

Psalm 34:7 — The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them.

Oneself can humbly receive, but to dream upon this and go beyond what is meant would be to add to Father's Word within one's heart, which must be avoided. This is no different in the expectations one may have in the current times.

James 4:13-15 — Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit." You don't even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are a bit of smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes. Instead, you should say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."

Perhaps a further consideration is that the Rapture is only around the corner. Excess dreams of Father's promise of rescue will not help to fulfill Father's Will, but dreams also have a place in Creation, so the retaining of such hope in Father's promise is also important. In this, it is then not to dream of pleasure or being surrounded by wealth, but of Father's reality; not trying to add to what Father wants, but helping to progress everything just right.

We're not done yet.
By Deborah

Psalm 139:23-24 (HCSB)
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way.

Issues. We all have them. I am constantly struggling with mine. Some days are better than others. Some weeks are better than others. I personally don’t know anyone that has completely mastered their issues. As in… task completed, filed away, never to be visited again.

Things we think we have fully worked out seem to eventually pop their ugly heads up. The blessing we have from Father is the knowledge that a particular pattern of thought or behavior isn’t desirable. And so in recognizing these things we are able to grow closer to Her and Her Way.

Now, sometimes we can catch ourselves before we enter into that thought or behavior. Other times it isn’t until we are fully involved or the event is over that we realize we still have work to do. That work truly cannot be taken on without Father’s love, support, wisdom and guidance. And any credit for progress must be given fully to Yahweh. The patience She demonstrates is certainly undeserved on our parts. On the flip side of that, She wants us to be patient with ourselves for this rooting out of evil is something that takes time, practice and self restraint. For some, being reactive is a life long pattern of behavior. But it is a pattern that can and will be broken by relying on Yahweh. We may not always have the strength to do what is right, but Father will provide it if we only ask. Just remember to turn to Her and never give up.

Psalm 29:11 The LORD gives His people strength; the LORD blesses His people with peace.

Psalm 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart rejoices, and I praise Him with my song.

2 Timothy 4:17 But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the proclamation might be fully made through me, and all the Gentiles might hear. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth.

I pray that this day, this week, you rely on Father to lead you away from that which is offensive and toward the everlasting way. Amen.

Nourishment From The Throne

Cherubic Commander:

Now, you must question whether or not ghosts really exist. Some people believe that Christ did not teach of the existence of ghosts, while others believe he did. What is the truth of the matter? Let's examine Father's Word to mankind.

Who was closest to Christ Jesus? Was it not his disciples that knew him personally on a one on one basis? With certainty you know that Christ taught the people he came in contact with. So, how did his disciples view "ghosts"? Did they believe in their existence. The Jehovah's witnesses do not believe in the existence of ghosts. They believe only in angelic personage of a heavenly class that they claim to be 144,000 followers of Christ that have arisen to heavenly life. But is this concept they teach – is it truth?

Matthew 14:26
"When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and cried out in fear."
Here you have those closest to Christ Jesus. They had been taught the truth by him personally. Their first reaction at witnessing him walking on water is that he was a ghost. If they had not been taught the concept of the existence of ghosts, then why would they have clung to a falsehood by thinking Christ was a ghost?"

Definition of a ghost:
ghost >noun 1 an apparition of a dead person which is believed to appear to the living. 2 a faint trace: the ghost of a smile. 3 a faint secondary image produced by a fault in an optical system or on a cathode ray screen. >verb act as ghost writer of.
-PHRASES give up the ghost die or stop functioning.
-ORIGIN Old English, 'spirit, soul'.

And so, what did Christ reply to his disciples that thought he was a ghost? Did he say that ghosts did not exist in the afterlife where spirit life is abundant? Let's examine what he actually said: "27 Immediately Jesus spoke to them. "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Why did he tell them to have courage and not to be afraid? Is it possible that in Christ's teachings he had warned about two different classes of ghosts? One being of the holy class, and one being of a converted group that side with Satan in this spiritual war. Knowledge of the convert class of ghosts would give reason to fear Satan's helpers. But Christ told them not to be afraid because it was him and not what they feared. The fear of Satan's side comes with the teaching that all who oppose Father are evil. They are to be avoided and not listened to.

In another instance, Christ spoke of ghosts: Luke 24:39
"Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Touch Me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."
Christ gave truth that ghosts exist in a form that requires no flesh or bones. It is in full compliance with his teachings of the truth.

But, does Father Herself recognize the existence of ghosts? If Christ taught what Father sent him to teach, then they must be in union with one another since Christ is a reflection of our Most High God Yahweh. Isaiah 19:3 "Egypt's spirit will be disturbed within it, and I will frustrate its plans. Then they will seek idols, ghosts, spirits of the dead, and spiritists." Isaiah was borne along with Father's spirit in what was spoken through the Word. Does saying "ghosts, spirits of the dead" mean that he was redundant? Isn't a spirit of the dead a ghost? Yes, but the meaning of what is being defined in this Scripture comes with understanding. Ghosts are the spirit life after human life has ceased in the flesh. However, in this Scriptures context Isaiah is not being redundant. "spirits of the dead," are referring to demons that share a relationship with humans that have passed over and are within the Satanic family. Since Father says "and I will frustrate its plans." we know that those seeking guidance from the other side are not seeking Father's help, but instead are seeking help from the Satanic family. And since the Scripture included "ghosts" we know that there are some evil ghosts on the other side. This is how you reason out using the Word to learn the truth of a matter.

Psalm 88:10
"Do You work wonders for the dead? Do departed spirits rise up to praise You?"
Father offers the truth to those that pass over. Those that accept are the ones that praise Father. The exception to those that are taught what is truth, is those that are sentenced to dark realms for terrible sins that Father cannot overlook. They are aware of the truth, but not free to side with Satan in an active way. And how do we know that Father would imprison ghosts that are unfit for freedom outside dark realms? Because Father did not hold back from punishing those closest to Her throne – Her angelic children that sinned. She restricted them, and banished them from Her heavenly paradise. They to are in prison. Each of you live on the planet they are imprisoned upon.

Proverbs 21:16
"The man who strays from the way of wisdom will come to rest in the assembly of the departed spirits."
Who are the assembly of departed spirits? They are the converts and fallen angelic hosts that make up the assembly of Satan's family.

Enough for now. We'll let you ponder over these things.

More to ponder:

Isaiah 26:13-15
13 "LORD, our God, other lords than You have ruled over us,
but we remember Your name alone.
14 The dead do not live;
departed spirits do not rise up.
Indeed, You have visited and destroyed them;
You have wiped out all memory of them."

[In order to visit and destroy them, to wipe them from Her memory, they would have had to be what? Alive after having departed their human lives. So, as with those angels that failed Father, they must share in what? Proverbs 2:18 "for her house sinks down to death and her ways to the land of the departed spirits. The departed angelic spirits meet their final demise at what place? This planet. It is the hub of the spiritual war. Converts sink down to death with the family they have willingly joined. And since each of you have been taught about death in the spirit realm, and that it requires Father's memory to reanimate those that are killed, you can ascertain that wiping out the memory by action on Father's part is the wiping out of future existence on the part of any spirit life that falls in that unfortunate category.

Genesis 49:6
"May I never enter their council; may I never join their assembly. For in their anger they kill men, and on a whim they hamstring oxen."
Never listen to the council of those who are evil. Never join the assembly of the wicked. They are destined to be wiped from Father's memory.

CHILE has begun to count the cost of its deadly 8.8 magnitude earthquake as nations around the Pacific eased their fears of a devastating tsunami. The quake, on Saturday morning, killed at least 708 people – 90% of them in their homes. It is feared the damage may cost tens of billions of dollars. About 1.5 million homes have been damaged and police patrols have been stepped up to deter looters. The death toll looks set to rise, following reports that about 350 people died in the town of Constitucion alone, both by the quake and the tsunami it set off. Around the city of Concepcion, whole villages have been flattened. Highways have been sliced in two and bridges have collapsed. In Santiago, the city's new buildings seemed to have survived more or less intact, but it's old buildings fell. The coastal town of Talcahuano, badly damaged by tsunami waves, is said to be the worst affected. The 8.8 quake is ONE OF THE BIGGEST EVER RECORDED and the LARGEST TO HIT CHILE IN 50 YEARS. The Pacific-wide alert for a tsunami in the wake of the quake has been lifted, but Japan has maintained an alert, issuing evacuation orders for 320,000 people around the coast. However, it downgraded its alert from major to normal – meaning waves of two metres were expected rather than three. About 50 Pacific countries and territories had issued tsunami alerts. French Polynesia and Tahiti were among those hit by high waves, but no casualties have been reported. The total economic damage caused by the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile is estminated at $15 billion to $30 billion.

ARGENTINA – A 6.0-magnitude earthquake killed two people in Argentina just hours after the massive quake struck off Chile

Chile quake shortened our days –
Chile's massive Feb. 27 earthquake may have shortened all of our days, according to NASA. The magnitude 8.8 quake should have shortened the length of an Earth day by about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second). Furthermore, the quake should have moved the "figure axis" (about which Earth's mass is balanced; offset about 33 feet off the north-south axis) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 3 inches). The 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatran earthquake shortened the length of day by 6.8 microseconds, much more than the Chile quake did. But the Sumatran quake shifted Earth's axis by only 2.32 milliarcseconds (about 2.76 inches). The Chile quake should have changed the axis more than the much larger Sumatran one because it was in the Earth's mid-latitudes, rather than near the equator, putting its force at a more effective place for shifting the axis, and because it was on a fault that dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle, making it more effective in moving Earth's mass vertically.

CHILE – Strong aftershocks have hit areas devastated by last week's earthquake in central Chile, triggering brief panic. The tremors of magnitude 5.5 and higher were felt in several cities, including Santiago. They prompted tsunami warnings, but these were later lifted. Nearly 800 people are known to have died in last Saturday's 8.8 magnitude quake and the tsunami it generated. There are reports of many people still missing in the coastal town of Constitucion. There have been complaints that the number of deaths could have been lower if the government had moved more quickly immediately after the earthquake struck before dawn on Saturday. An admiral said Chile's navy was partially to blame for the lack of a clear tsunami warning, but said the natural disaster agency should share the blame. "The information that the head of the [oceanographic service] gave to the president, undoubtedly stopped the [government natural disaster agency], under instructions from the president, from declaring an alert." The head of the natural disaster agency said an earlier alert would not have helped save lives because there was no system in place to tell people in time. About two million Chileans are believed to have been affected by Saturday's earthquake, the seventh most powerful on record and THE WORST DISASTER TO HIT CHILE IN 50 YEARS. About 1.5 million homes in Chile have been damaged. (Detailed map of quake)

Quake threatens important Chile fish, wine sectors – The tsunami that hit the coastal city of Talcahuano sent 50-ton fishing boats crashing onto land and demolished its port – wiping out the $40 million in business from the annual anchovy and sardine catch. Less than 100 miles (160 kilometers) away, Chile's economy took another beating as the mammoth quake downed bridges and opened up vast crevices on the nation's only north-south highway, paralyzing the export lifeline for the nation's renowned farm-raised salmon industry. And Chile's telecommunications system was still badly out of whack Wednesday – four days after the quake. The quake has forced tens of thousands into unemployment with no end in sight in the nation's south-southwest area and will almost certainly mean higher salmon prices at U.S. supermarkets. It also translates into higher wine production costs for an industry already hurt by the declining value of the U.S. dollar. Chile's copper industry, which supplies a third of the world's copper, wasn't badly affected because most operations lie north of Santiago. (5 photos)

TAIWAN – A 6.3 earthquake in southern Taiwan has disrupted power supplies in the capital, Taipei, and caused the high speed rail service to be suspended. There have been no reported deaths but several injuries from falling objects. Four years ago a 6.7 magnitude quake in the area severed undersea cables and disrupted telephone and Internet service throughout Asia. Several fires broke out after the latest quake. Subway service in the city of Kaohsiung was temporarily disrupted. Telephone service in some parts of Taiwan was patchy. Buildings swayed in the capital when the quake struck. The quake's epicentre was near the town of Jiashian, in the same area where the devastating typhoon Morakot struck last August. Some temporary housing in the town collapsed as a result of the quake.

TAIWAN – The major 6.4 earthquake and several aftershocks in Taiwan, which injured dozens of people and caused several fires on Thursday, also sent Chunghwa Telecom workers scrambling to fix undersea fiber-optic telecommunications cables to prevent service disruptions around Asia. The quake damaged four undersea cables in six different places, knocking out service for parts of the day Thursday and early today. Global communications and Internet service on all networks has already been restored, mainly by rerouting service on undamaged cables. Cables around Taiwan have a rough life. The island is often battered by typhoons and earthquakes that can knock them out or cause undersea landslides, which send boulders showering down on them.

CHILE – Rebuilding Chile after the quake will take three to four years, says their President.

Earthquake clusters rattle the start of the new year – If you think there's an UNUSUALLY HIGH NUMBER OF BIG QUAKES lately you're right. The U.S. Geological Survey says clusters happen after a large earthquake hits. That triggers a domino effect. The stress on the ground shifts, and a series of tremors soon follow. On January 12th, a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti. Then February 26, a tremor of the same magnitude rattled Japan. The next day, an 8.8 quake devastated Chile. Then on Wednesday, Taiwan got hit with a 6.4 earthquake. The same day a 6.0 aftershock tormented Chile. At the Hawaii Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, experts say it's normal for earthquakes to come in clusters, and it means the potential for another tsunami.

A senior researcher with CEA China Earthquake Networks Center says the world looks like it is entering a new phase of earthquake activity. He has been closely observing earthquake trends. The latest movements of the earth's crust undoubtedly demonstrate an "active state." "They are not abnormal, though." The Haiti and Chile earthquakes were related, he believes. "In terms of earthquakes, the world seems to have entered a new phase. It may have started in late 2004 when a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the eastern part of Indonesia." The world experienced an active quake phase from 1900 to 1964, when several strong quakes wrecked havoc. The following 40 or so years were relatively inactive. The intensity of the latest earthquake in Chile was about 272 times that of the Haiti quake, yet it caused less damages. The epicenter of the Chile quake was 60 km under ground, while the depth of the Haiti quake epicenter was 10 km. Probably for this reason as well, the Chile quake did not cause many related disasters such as tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. He rejects the notion that recent earthquakes are a premonition to imminent human catastrophe. "The late renowned Chinese geologist Li Siguang proposed that the earth is rotating slower than it was some 3 billion years ago." Frequent earthquakes in the last few years suggest the world has entered a new era of earth crust movement. How long this new phase will last and when and where the next strong quake will be are difficult to say. "But it seems to follow its own course, a normal cycle."

There's no geological connection between the quakes in Taiwan and Chile, and nothing unusual in the number of recent big quakes, says the director of the Seismology Center of Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau. "Because Haiti just happened, everyone's paying more attention to earthquakes. But the activity is normal – it's not so scary." The Taiwan, Chile, and Haiti quakes involved different tectonic plates. Globally, there is an average of one magnitude 8 or higher earthquake per year, there are 17 magnitude 7 or higher quakes, and 170 to 180 quakes of magnitude 6 or larger. So far this year there has only been one quake higher than 8 – Chile's fearsome, 8.8 magnitude temblor. Last year there were 16 magnitude 7 or higher quakes, right at the average. And so far this year there have been three magnitude 7 or higher quakes, including Haiti's. "From a global view, that's not especially a lot." Taiwan experiences a quake of magnitude 7 or higher every five years and a quake of magnitude 6 or higher every 100 days. "We've only had one like this so far this year, so that's still normal."

VOLCANOES –

YELLOWSTONE – The recent Yellowstone earthquake swarm was the second-largest ever.

CHILE – Volcanic explosions expected in Chile quake's wake. Besides aftershocks, Chile's magnitude 8.8 earthquake on 27 February may also leave a legacy of volcanic explosions. "We expect to see an upsurge in volcanic activity over the next 12 months." Darwin observed that a large earthquake off Chile's coastline in February 1835 appeared to resurrect previously inactive volcanoes, and cause active ones to increase their eruption rates. Increases in volcanic activity have occurred following other large earthquakes along its coastline. In particular, after a magnitude 8.3 in 1906 and a magnitude 9.5 earthquake in 1960, there were three or four more volcanic eruptions within about 500 kilometres of the epicentre in the following year than would normally be expected. Last week's earthquake occurred on the same section of fault that caused the earthquake Darwin observed in 1835. "We'll be using satellite measurements of heat and deformation to keep an eye on the entire arc of volcanoes, from Llaima in the south to Tupungatito in the north." The risk to local people from this extra volcanism is likely to be minimal. "At volcanoes that are already active we might see an increase in steam explosions, but we don't expect it to present a significantly increased danger."

COSTA RICA – The Irazú volcano sent a panic chill in the neighbouring communities Monday night, as residents reported at least 9 tremors from the volcano during a 30 minute period. Residents say the volcano, located north of Cartago, began acting up after 7pm. None of the tremors felt were above 3 on the Richter scale. There was panic among the residents who envisioned the fresh television and newspaper images of the death and destruction of the 8.8 earthquake in Chile. The Irazú is located next to the Turrialba volcano that has been actively spewing ash and gases for the last several months. Also fresh in the minds of Irazú residents is the death and destruction of Cinchona last January 8, 2009, that is located near the Poás volcano, a short distance from Irazú. The Irazú has recorded 23 eruptions during its history, with its first recorded eruption in 1723. The latest explosion by the colossus was in 1965 and 1963. Given the height, geographical location, climatic condition and eruptions history, the Irazú poses the greatest volcanic threat to the Central Valley.

COSTA RICA –
An eruption at Volcan Arenal, a volcano in north-central Costa Rica, caused small fires and avalanches on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The volcano emitted a stream of lava on its southern flank, causing small avalanches on the south slope of the mountain. The lava also ignited some trees and plants as it reached the fauna line on the volcano's side. On Tuesday morning, between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. the volcano emitted hot gas and rock in what is known as a pyroclastic eruption, registering small tremors. None of the activity has threatened La Fortuna, the town at the base of the volcano, and Arenal National Park is still open. Scientists said the activity is normal and that the accumulation of the material around the crater of Arenal will increase the height of the mountain, which has been growing in recent years due to similar eruptions. [This follows activity at the Irazú volcano Monday night. The Irazú is located next to the Turrialba volcano that has been actively spewing ash and gases for the last several months.]

CHILE – The Villarrica volcano in Pucon has been upgraded from green to amber alert following the 8.8 earthquake that occurred on Saturday morning. The change in status advises caution to all those living around the volcano. Yesterday there were unofficial reports of increased activity. Locals say it’s quite normal after an earthquake to see flames and smoke emerge from the mouth of the volcano; it means that the volcano is venting and relieving pressure. They say you have to worry when the smoke and flames stop, because this means that the volcano is readying itself to erupt.

TSUNAMI / FREAK WAVES / ABNORMAL TIDES / RISING SEA LEVELS –

CHILE – The massive earthquake that rocked Chile early Saturday and the tsunamis that followed it have devastated the Andean nation's coastal communities. Several seaside resort towns have simply been washed away, and such was the fate of Pelluhue, and its roughly 1000 residents. "The earth started shaking so violently that we couldn't stand." The air was filled with the tidal waves' loud crushing of houses along the shoreline. In one spot, the waves harpooned 70-foot-high Cypress trees into beachfront homes, while washing other houses up onto the mountainside above the beachfront town. Residents said a series of waves started to reach shore shortly after the 8.8-magnitude quake struck. The first waves hit about five minutes after the quake, while the biggest wave slammed into the town about an hour later. Residents said they are running short of food and water.

JAPAN has evacuated more than 320,000 people as a tsunami triggered by Chile's massive earthquake sent waves up to 1.2 metres high barrelling into its long Pacific coastline. Floodwaters inundated buildings and left cars stranded in eastern harbours on the main island of Honshu and on far-northern Hokkaido, while white-crested waves raced from the ocean up coastal rivers. By nightfall last night, police had reported no casualties and authorities downgraded the threat a notch from a "major tsunami alert" (a warning of possible three-metre waves; they had ISSUED IT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 15 YEARS). But more waves of one metre hit the coast after dark and thousands of people readied to spend the chilly winter night in their emergency shelters up in town halls and school buildings. The day had started with evacuation sirens wailing across the east coast of the archipelago, with millions glued to their television sets as tsunami warnings flashed across every channel. Massive steel gates slammed shut across the entrances to fishing ports. Coastguard vessels and air force jets fanned out to search for stray ships still at sea and to observe damage. "Please do not approach the coast at any cost." East-coast railway services were halted and cities and towns cancelled festivals and local elections. The initial wave, just 30 cm high, hit the remote port of Nemuro on Hokkaido, where the sea rose to flood port-side warehouses and leave parked vehicles stranded, as ships evacuated the harbour. The highest tsunami wave of 1.2 metres hit the port of Kuji in Iwate prefecture, where almost 9000 people were evacuated. In 1960, a 9.5-magnitude earthquake in Chile, the largest on record, sent a tsunami hurtling across the Pacific that killed more than 140 people in Japan. On Saturday, Okinawa was hit by a big 7.0-magnitude quake, triggering minor tsunamis but causing only small damage to housing and minor injuries.

NEW ZEALAND –
Waves up to 1.5 metres (five feet) high rammed into New Zealand today as a tsunami generated by the huge earthquake in Chile intensified, but there were no reports of serious damage. New Zealand's entire east coast was at risk with walls of water up to three metres (10 feet) expected. The first wave of 20 centimetres arrived at the Chathams soon after 7am and within three hours the waves had risen to 1.5 metres.

CALIFORNIA – A tsunami driven by the massive earthquake in Chile surged into Ventura County on Saturday, damaging more than a dozen boat docks and forcing boat owners to scramble after a few loose vessels, but causing no injuries. A tidal surge estimated at 3 feet rolled into Ventura Harbor about 1 p.m. and unmoored 14 residential docks in the Ventura Keys neighborhood. Some docks were partially submerged or had broken away from rollers that connected them to cement piles. Officials in the Ventura Harbor Master’s Office said there was some erosion and navigational buoys came loose in the inner harbor area, but there were no major incidents. A sailing regatta was returning to the harbor and needed assistance from the Harbor Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard to navigate the main channel. A tsunami advisory was issued for the California coast and other Pacific shores as a result of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile. There were around 8-10 surges from 12:50pm till 6:30pm. There were water level fluctuations of about 4 feet to 6 feet. “That’s a big swing." Devastating tsunamis are RARE in California. Since 1812, 14 tsunamis with waves higher than 3 feet have been observed along the California coast, but only six caused destruction. The deadliest occurred in 1964 when a magnitude 9.2 quake in Alaska spawned tsunami waves that killed 12 people in Northern California.

CALIFORNIA – This weekend's tsunami advisory warnings to many Southern (and Northern) California territories turned out to be just for precautionary measures — for the most part. Coastal areas still received a dramatic lash from Mother Nature on Saturday, when two different high tides slammed several cities. The flooding brought with it debris and sand, the combination of which forced the closing of the important Pacific Coast Highway for the duration of Saturday. These extreme conditions, however, didn't do much to deter throngs of surfers from the area. The National Weather Service maintained its high-surf warnings for north and northwest facing beaches. Watergoers were advised to take extreme precautions Monday or even refrain from beaches altogether as officials warned of dangerous swells, rip currents, and the possibility of beach erosion.

FLORIDA – High winds were causing hazardous beach conditions on Tuesday. The wind was whipping the chilly 50- to 60-degree Gulf into a frenzy. "Red flag means dangerous conditions exist. Only the strongest of swimmers should go into the water." Thanks to the weather, rip currents, which can drag swimmers offshore, exist everywhere. But yesterday's rough surf and strong rip tides are nothing compared to what they expected in the next 24 hours. "As the wind switches out of the north this evening, our surf is going to get picked up and it's going to turn into a wind chop. t's going to be a little bit more aggressive and a little bit more forceful." Weather officials warn people living along the coast to brace for gale force winds, which means sustained speeds of 25 mph to 35 mph and gusts reaching 46 mph – that's about the same wind speeds as a tropical storm.

SPAIN – 3/3/10 – A huge wave has slammed into a cruise ship carrying almost 2000 people in the Mediterranean, leaving two people dead and six injured. The FREAK WAVE "smashed windows in the lounge area" of the ship. The accident occurred on Wednesday evening off the coast of Spain's northeastern Catalonia region as the vessel was en route for the Italian port of Genoa. After the accident the captain rerouted the ship to the Spanish port of Barcelona, where it arrived late on Wednesday to evacuate the dead and injured. Five people were slightly injured while a 62-year-old woman was in serious condition with her both her legs broken.

The rogue waves were 26ft (8m) high. Three "abnormally high" waves broke windows in the front of the ship. "A wave broke the glass in the area of the saloon and water was taken on board." There had been winds of more than 100km/h (60 mph) in the area. [This is the latest in a rash of huge waves striking ships and coasts around the globe.]

TROPICAL STORMS –

Cyclone 17P finally strengthened enough to get named Tropical Storm Sarah over the weekend, as it continued on a southern track toward the South Cook Islands. It didn't hold together long however, as by Monday, March 1, the storm has dissipated. Tropical Storm Sarah's winds peaked around 39 mph (35 knots) on Saturday, February 27. Thirty-nine mph is the lowest maximum sustained wind speed a cyclone can have to be classified as a tropical storm. At 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued its final warning on the system. It was about 555 miles east-southeast of Pago Pago, American Samoa at that time. Sarah/17P was still moving at the slow pace it maintained the previous week, at 4 mph (3 knots). Sarah was generating 8-foot high waves on Saturday that affected the coasts of the South Cook Islands. In February, Cyclone Pat lashed parts of Aitutaki with heavy rain and high winds that damaged houses and buildings, so residents were paying close attention to Sarah's approach. The islands experienced scattered heavy showers, ocean swells and coastal flooding in some low lying areas.

AUSTRALIA – Conditions similar to low category cyclone – The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning that a second low developing around Fraser Island will intensify the region’s rainfall. People in the Sunshine Coast hinterland which suffered flash flooding 11 months ago have been warned together the two weather systems could dump as much as 300mm. Flood and weather warnings are in place across much of Queensland. The “east coast low” forming near Fraser will create conditions similar to a low category cyclone for coastal communities between Cape Moreton and Sandy Cape.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – Meteorologists predict heavy rains but say rumours that a cyclone will hit the UAE are false. Heavy rains are being caused by shamal winds and are normal for March. But while more storms are forecast, they dismissed rumours of any cyclone hitting the country. E-mails spreading such rumours have been causing panic. The next two days will be stormy and cloudy with chances of intense local flooding, thunderstorms and strong winds. Many companies have advised their staff to go home early to avoid getting stuck in traffic or storms. Preliminary reports suggest that some houses damaged as a result of strong winds and rain require immediate rehabilitation. With strong winds gusting at times, sand and dust will blow reducing horizontal visibility over open areas and rough seas in general. February has been ONE OF THE WILDEST MONTHS in the UAE climatic calendar due to the regular winter shamals that bring occasional showery conditions to the southern Gulf. "March is often a very changeable month when Dubai can experience a wide range of weather phenomena. March has the highest expected number of rainy days, six on average and up to 18 in the past, as well as the most frequent occurrence of thunderstorms. Average rainfall for the month is 21mm but has been as high as 155 mm in the past.

HEAVY RAINS / FLOODING / LANDSLIDES / UNUSUAL & OUT-OF-SEASON WEATHER –

HAITI – At least eight people were killed in floods triggered by heavy rain in earthquake-stricken Haiti.

WESTERN EUROPE – At least 50 people have been killed in storms that have lashed parts of Spain, Portugal and France. Forty-five of the victims died in France, where many drowned or were hit by parts of buildings or falling trees. Winds of up to 140km/h (87mph) caused chaos as they moved from Portugal up through the Bay of Biscay. Wind speeds hit 175km/h at the top of the Eiffel Tower. The storm system is moving north-eastwards and areas of France bordering Belgium and Germany are on alert for heavy rain and high winds. Worst affected have been the Vendee and Charente-Maritime regions on the western coast of France. Huge waves and strong gusts battered many coastal towns, spreading floods inland and destroying buildings. Residents took to their roofs in the Vendee region and police helicopters were in action attempting to locate and rescue them. At least a dozen people are said to be missing in France and 59 others injured. More than a million homes in France have lost electricity. The storm system, named Xynthia, has put five of the 95 French departments on red alert – only the second such warning since a new emergency system was introduced in 2001. Spain's Canary Islands, particularly La Palma, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, were hit by the storm, although there was no great damage

UNITED KINGDOM – Large parts of the UK are on flood alert as the country is clipped by the deadly storm sweeping across Europe. Parts of Cambridgeshire face a severe flood warning meaning lives and dozens of properties may be at risk. The Environment Agency also has 23 flood warnings in place in East Anglia and north-east England and 137 flood watches across England and Wales. The UK has escaped the 87mph winds which lashed parts of Spain, Portugal and France. The worst winds reported in Britain reached 40 to 50mph in parts of Kent and East Anglia, with central England also badly hit. In the Isle of Wight, 25mm (1in) of rainfall was recorded. Two flood watches are currently in force in Scotland. Scotland saw the return of snow last week, and two skiers had to be rescued after being caught in an avalanche on Saturday.

EGYPT – A hail storm in Cairo has killed four people and injured more than 50 others. The extreme weather conditions caused chaos in Egypt's capital city, resulting in traffic accidents and widespread panic. In the country's second largest city, Alexandria, located on the Mediterranean Sea coast waves as high as a two-story building hit the shore. Also a European luxury cruise ship crashed into a pier in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh early Friday morning killing three sailors and wounding four tourists. Another person was killed amidst a wave of car collisions nationwide. The storm has subsided but meteorologists predicted severe weather in the next three days.

AUSTRALIA – Hundreds of people have fled rising floodwaters in Charleville and Roma after RECORD-BREAKING RAINS hit a swathe of southwest Queensland still officially gripped by drought. Disaster situations have been declared in the two towns. Up to two-thirds of all properties in Charleville are expected to be flooded as waters continue to rise in Bradley's Gully, which runs through the town. To Charleville's west, the opal town of Quilpie has received close to its YEARLY average rainfall in three days. All three communities have been officially drought declared for years – Charleville since 2003, Quilpie since 2002 and Roma since 2005. There's also been heavy rain across Queensland's southeast corner, causing localised flooding in Brisbane and on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. The Bureau of Meteorology continues to warn of flooding in the southwest and of flooding and damaging winds in coastal communities from the Gold Coast north to Hervey Bay. The deluge has been blamed on a monsoonal low that's dumped up to 165mm across the southwest. A second low sitting around Fraser Island has compounded the situation. Bedourie and Birdsville, in Queensland's far southwest, have also been hit by flooding and could be isolated for weeks.

FRANCE – Blame is being laid on weak and aged sea defences after violent storms left at least 50 dead and thousands homeless along France's Atlantic coast. Many died after the sea wall off the coastal town of L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer was breached, allowing 8m-high (26ft) waves
to crash through the streets. "Either we build (new) sea walls, in which case they need to be taller and taller… or we have to build further inland." The Atlantic storm, named Xynthia, smashed into the western coasts of France, Portugal and Spain on Sunday, with torrential rain driven by winds of up to 140km/h (87mph). The storm has since swept north-eastwards into Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. and deaths have been reported in Portugal, Spain, Belgium and Germany. Nearly 10,000 emergency staff were working on the west coast on Monday morning, searching for and helping survivors. As many as nine people are thought to be missing. More than a million homes in France have lost electricity, from the Brittany peninsula in the west to the highlands of the Massif Central. Huge waves and strong gusts battered many coastal towns, flooding inland areas and destroying buildings.

UGANDA – About 30 people have been killed in a landslide in the mountainous eastern region of Bududa in Uganda. About 100 people are reported missing. Police and rescuers are reported to be heading to the area, which has recently experienced heavy rains.
The region often suffers from landslides but this is an UNUSUALLY high death toll.

AUSTRALIA – Queensland's big wet may have caused more infrastructure damage than Cyclone Larry.

UGANDA –
More than 80 bodies have been recovered from the mud which engulfed villages on the slopes of Mount Elgon. Mudslides swept away three villages near the eastern town of Bududa. At least 250 people are still missing. In one village, schoolchildren took shelter in a health centre later engulfed by the mud. In the village of Nametsi, rescuers struggled to search through a wall of mud some 16ft (5m) high, which had buried most structures. The landslides were triggered by several days of unusually heavy rain. At least a month more of heavy rain is forecast, so analysts say the authorities are expecting things to get worse before they get better.

HAITI – Thirteen dead. Submerged houses. Some 3,000 people evacuated from their homes. Fields and banana plantations waterlogged. Drowned livestock. Impassable roads. Fresh trauma for quake-displaced thousands. This is the plight of Les Cayes, a city on Haiti’s south coast, after an unseasonal deluge. And hurricane season is not far off. Rains hit the area on 27-28 February. On 2 March many homes still had standing water. “People are used to dealing with floods, just not this early.” The rainy season proper usually starts in the beginning of April and peaks in May. "We face an almost unique set of circumstances generated by a catastrophic quake, a rainy season, and a hurricane season, one after the other in rapid succession."

HEAVY SNOW / EXTREME COLD –

U.S. – The latest storm on Friday took New York City's total snowfall for February to more than 36 inches (91 cm), making it THE SNOWIEST MONTH ON RECORD. It was the third heavy storm to hit the region in a month.

SWEDEN – Dozens of ships that had been trapped in ice in the Baltic Sea off Stockholm, some for several days, have been freed. On Thursday, icebreakers had to be used to free a ferry which had 943 passengers and crew on board. Two other ferries managed to break free on Thursday. At least 26 ships are awaiting help further north in the Bay of Bothnia. Sea ice in the area would not normally have been a problem for merchant ships. However, onshore winds of about 72km/h (45mph) had pushed the ice rapidly towards the coast and created ridges which the merchant ships could not cope with. Icebreakers subsequently had to be deployed by both Sweden and Finland. They HAD NOT SEEN SO MANY SHIPS STUCK AT ONCE SINCE THE MID-1980s. (map)

UNITED KINGDOM – The Met Office will stop publishing seasonal forecasts, after it came in for criticism for failing to predict extreme weather. It was berated for not foreseeing that the UK would suffer this cold winter or the last three wet summers in its seasonal forecasts. The forecasts, four times a year, will be replaced by monthly predictions. It said the UK is one of the hardest places to provide forecasts for due to its "size and location", making it "very hard to forecast much beyond a week". However, it said its short-term forecasts are "extremely accurate".

EXTREME HEAT / WILDFIRES / DROUGHT / CLIMATE CHANGE-

UN's climate link to hurricanes in doubt – Research by hurricane scientists may force the UN’s climate panel to reconsider its claims that greenhouse gas emissions have caused an increase in the number of tropical storms. The benchmark report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has stated that a worldwide increase in hurricane-force storms since 1970 was probably linked to global warming. It followed some of the most damaging storms in history such as Hurricane Katrina, which hit New Orleans and Hurricane Dennis which hit Cuba, both in 2005. The IPCC added that humanity could expect a big increase in such storms over the 21st century unless greenhouse gas emissions were controlled. However, the latest research paints a very different picture. It suggests that the rise in hurricane frequency since 1995 was just part of a natural cycle, and that several similar previous increases have been recorded, each followed by a decline. Looking to the future, it also draws on computer modelling to predict that the most likely impact of global warming will be to DECREASE the frequency of tropical storms, by up to 34% by 2100. It does, however, suggest that when tropical storms do occur they could get slightly stronger, with average windspeeds rising by 2-11% by 2100. Hurricane frequency and intensity vary according to an entirely natural cycle, each lasting around 50-80 years. The last such surge began around 1925 and lasted until about 1955. Conversely there were declines in frequency between both 1910-1925 and from 1955-1995. ”There are a lot of legitimate concerns about climate change but, in my opinion, hurricanes are not among them. We are looking at a decrease in frequency and a small increase in severity.”

BRAZIL – Amid serious concerns over climate change, the mass death of tons of fish on the shores of Rio de Janeiro's main lagoon has raised an alarm for a global warming disaster. About 100 city clean-up crews say they have removed some 90 tonnes of dead fish so far on the shores of a popular beachside lagoon in Rio. There was no immediate estimate of how many died, but several species were involved. The unpleasant smell is disturbing the local residents and passersby. Experts say the mass death could be the result of an abrupt temperature change, falling 10 degrees centigrade in 24 hours.

CHINA – Severe drought will continue to ravage southwest China as no major rainfalls are expected in the next three days.

Huge iceberg 'threatens sea-life' – A vast iceberg that broke off eastern Antarctic earlier this month could disrupt marine life in the region, scientists have warned. They say the iceberg, which is 78km long and up to 39km wide, could have consequences for the area's colonies of emperor penguins as they may be forced to travel further afield to find food. The iceberg calved from the Mertz Glacier Tongue after it was hit by another huge iceberg, called B9B. The change in the availability of open water could affect the rate of food production, which would have an impact on the amount of wildlife it could sustain. "If the area gets choked up (with ice), then they would have to go elsewhere and look for food." The calving of the iceberg, which has an estimated mass of 700-800bn tonnes, has changed the shape of the local geography. "We have got two massive icebergs that – end to end – create a fence of about 180km. So the area's geography has changed from a situation where we effectively had a box in which two sides were open ocean. Now we have a fence across one side of the box." Before the formation of the iceberg, the Mertz Peninsula provided the right conditions for a polynia – an expanse of open water surrounded by sea-ice – to exist. As well as providing a feeding site for the region's wildlife, the polynia also was a key production site of "bottom water"; very cold, dense water that sinks to the ocean floor. "Sea ice is relatively fresh compared to sea water, so the more sea ice you have (in the surrounding area), the more salt that is left in the remaining open water." The rise in the concentration of salt increases the water's density, causing it to sink to the bottom of the ocean. "This area around the Antarctic coastline, of which the Mertz Peninsula is one part, produces about one quarter of the Antarctic's bottom water, but the Mertz polynia is a major contributor." The new iceberg has shortened the length of the Mertz Glacier Tongue, which could result in pack ice entering the area and disrupting the polynia. "That means that the bottom water production rate… will decrease. The bottom water spills over the continental shelf, flows down the continental slope into the deep ocean." This process helps drive the "conveyor belt" of currents in the Southern, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Any disruption to the net flow of bottom water could result in a weakening in the deep ocean circulation system, which plays a key role in the global climate system. However, the researchers say the changes to the region triggered by the formation of the new iceberg will not shut down the circulation system or affect the world's climate. "There are also a number of other locations of bottom water formation, however. So, it's unlikely that a large-scale sustained change of the order of magnitude required for a global climate impact will happen from this one event."

Australian scientist claims THIS WINTER HAS BEEN THE HOTTEST THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN.
If that seems like a hard claim to take seriously as states across the U.S. recover from record-breaking snowfalls over the past few months, you’re not alone – but, say some scientists, you might be suffering from perception bias. Britons, too, are stunned by the claim at an online climate change briefing. The remarkable claim, based on global satellite data, follows Arctic temperatures that brought snow, ice and travel chaos to millions in the UK. At the height of the big freeze, the entire country was blanketed in snow. But “January, according to satellite data, was the hottest January we’ve ever seen. Last November was the hottest November we’ve ever seen. November-January as a whole is the hottest November-January the world has seen.” “It’s not warming the same everywhere but it is really quite challenging to find places that haven’t warmed in the past 50 years.” The comments, made earlier this week, have drawn responses from American experts, newspapers, and citizens alike who feel the statement may be inaccurate, misleading, or both. The average temperature in Atlanta in January, 38.5 degrees, was 4.2 degrees below normal: "I often question the validity of satellite-derived surface temperatures for the globe. Way too many variables to consider. As far as our January temps here in north Georgia, they were down below the average. Not uncommon during an El Nino winter. We found with an active southern jet stream, clouds and rain increased, tempering our high temperatures [and] bringing the daily average down. Also, with a huge snow pack to our north, any air mass traveling from the Northwest to the Southeast did not modify, so the winter chill was reinforced.” Some suggest that, because forecasts that this winter would be mild weren’t exactly too accurate, reading too deeply into the data might not just be difficult – it could simply be impossible.

AUSTRALIA – Climate experts say Perth's sweltering summer is the latest extreme weather event to hit Australia. The past three months – the DRIEST AND JOINT-HOTTEST ON RECORD for Perth – have followed a SERIES OF RECORD-BREAKING HEATWAVES that have hit Victoria and South Australia in the past 12 months, as well as extreme flooding that has lashed parts of Queensland and NSW. Perth's hot weather continued yesterday, with a maximum 39.1C recorded at 3.39pm. Experts say Perth's scorching summer should be filed under "freak weather" rather than be viewed as direct evidence of a shift in the climate. But this type of UNUSUALLY EXTREME WEATHER is predicted to become more commonplace as the climate warms.

The Bureau of Meteorology says February has been a month of extreme weather in the Northern Territory. Monsoon rain in the last five days has pushed rainfall totals to above average across parts of the Territory. The Darwin area recorded 70 millimetres of rain during the first three weeks of February, but recorded 429 millimetres by the month's end. Alice Springs area had the WETTEST FIEV-DAY PERIOD SINCE JANUARY 2001, recording a monthly total of 193 millimetres at the official weather station. "There have been WARMEST NIGHTS ON RECORD for the Darwin-Daly district." "The north coast was close to the driest February on record and Alice Springs east close to the wettest February on record and also had the WETTEST JANUARY AND FEBRUARY in some parts."So there have been quite a few extremes there."

THAILAND – Severe drought has dropped the Mekong River to its LOWEST LEVEL IN NEARLY 20 YEARS, halting some cargo traffic and boat tours on the waterway that is the lifeblood for 65 million people in six countries. The decrease was caused largely by an early end to the 2009 wet season and low rainfall during the monsoons. The river level in southwestern China is THE LOWEST IN 50 YEARS, with only half the volume that would be normal in February. Levels at mainstream measuring stations in Laos and northern Thailand are below those in 1992. River tour operators have stopped services on stretches of the river in Laos and cargo vessels have been halted in China's Yunnan province. The water scarcity has sparked fears of food shortages, lack of access to clean water and impoverishment in some of Southeast Asia's poorest regions.

SPACE WEATHER-

A spectaular eruption is underway on the sun. SOHO is tracking a bright CME (coronal mass ejection) billowing upward from the vicinity of the sun's north pole. Imagery from NASA's STEREO spacecraft show that this is a farside eruption, tilted away from Earth.

The far side of the sun is alive with activity. On Feb. 28th, NASA's twin STEREO spacecraft observed one and perhaps two clouds of material blasting away from a high-latitude, site not visible from Earth. So far, none of this activity appears to be Earth-directed. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory recorded a movie of the clouds billowing over the sun's northern limb. A solar wind stream flowing from a coronal hole could reach Earth on March 1st or 2nd

Old sunspot 1045 still has some life left in it. On March 1st, beginning at 2245 UT, magnetic fields around the much-decayed active region erupted for more than three hours. The eruption hurled a billion-ton CME away from the sun, but not toward Earth. The blast site is located on the sun's eastern limb where it faces away from our planet. This marks the fourth time in the past two days that a CME has billowed away from the sun without heading in our direction. Earth keeps dodging the bullet. (photo)

ODD-

AUSTRALIA – 2/25/10 & 2/26/10 – FISH HAVE FALLEN FROM THE SKY onto a Top End town – not once but twice. The Northern Territory News reports the FREAK PHENOMENA happened on Thursday and Friday afternoon at Lajamanu, about 550km southwest of Katherine. "Hundreds and hundreds" of small white fish fall from the sky…These fish were alive when they hit the ground." Lajamanu sits on the edge of the Tanami Desert, hundreds of kilometres from Lake Argyle and Lake Elliott and even further from the coast. But in 2004, locals reported fish falling from the sky, and in 1974, a similar incident captured international headlines. The geological conditions were perfect on Friday for a tornado in the Douglas Daly region, but there were no reports of one. "With an updraft, (fish and water picked up) could get up high – up to 60,000 or 70,000 feet."

HEALTH THREATS –

Global flu activity wanes, but hot spots persist –Though overall pandemic activity waned across the globe, some active areas were seen in parts of south and southeast Asia and in a few areas of eastern and southeastern Europe. Brunei Darussalam reported intensifying flu activity, and overall respiratory disease increased in some countries because of influenza B and respiratory syncytial virus activity. Low levels of influenza B and seasonal H3N2 flu circulated in parts of Africa and Asia.

Death toll in Japan called amazingly small – Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases has estimated that 20 million people in Japan, mostly children, were infected with H1N1. But fewer than 200 people in Japan have died of the illness, "an amazingly low toll." Early diagnosis and treatment apparently helped limit deaths. But the health ministry was slow to prepare for the H1N1 vaccination campaign and used a flawed communication strategy.

A laboratory at Hong Kong University detected a reassortant made up of a swine influenza virus and the pandemic H1N1 virus in a sample obtained from a slaughterhouse pig as part of a surveillance program. It is the FIRST REPORTED REASSORTANT BETWEEN THE TWO TYPES OF VIRUSES. The virus was detected in a pig that was imported from the Chinese mainland. The agriculture department said in statement that the finding doesn't pose a public health risk or present any food-safety issues. The finding isn't unexpected, likely occurs worldwide, and was only detected in Hong Kong because of intensive surveillance. A spokesman for Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protectio said that preliminary findings suggest the reassorant is sensitive to oseltamivir (Tamiflu). So far the new virus has not turned up in surveillance of human flu specimens obtained from Hong Kong residents. In the United States, swine surveillance suffers from a lack of food-animal research money, experts have said. Currently, most swine surveillance is conducted by a few dedicated groups at Iowa State University, the University of Minnesota, and St Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

Half of parents concerned about vaccine side effects.

Pandemic H1N1 flu hasn't ebbed as much as anticipated in Alabama, according to public health officials there. Although frequency was higher in the fall than it is currently, cases are still occurring across the state, and there were three deaths in February, a pattern unlike previous flu epidemics. The state ran a large school immunization program earlier in the winter, but school absences in the state remain higher than the typical 5%.

Pneumonia worse with H1N1 vs seasonal flu – Pandemic H1N1 flu virus has the intrinsic ability to cause more severe pneumonia than seasonal H1N1 flu This ability is a key measure of a flu virus's pandemic potential.

H1N1 could develop drug-resistance patterns of seasonal flu – If pandemic H1N1 follows the same evolutionary pathway as seasonal H1N1 strains, it will likely develop the resistance to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) that has become widespread in seasonal strains. Reassortment between pandemic and seasonal strains in areas where they co-circulate, such as China, could speed the evolution of resistance, and antiviral use must be judicious. (pdf file)

Ireland recorded almost 1,000 reactions to H1N1 vaccine – Most of the reactions were injection-site swelling, gastrointestinal problems, and flu-like symptoms. In its most recent update, the Irish Medicines Board said it has no mechanism for separating true adverse reactions from coincidental events.

Allergy season – Sneezing, congestion, and runny noses from hay fever may be lasting longer because climate change may be extending pollen seasons.

College indicators show no sustained flu wave – Flu-like illness activity at US colleges decreased slightly last week, and although disease incidence was higher than it was between mid December and mid February, the American College Health Association sees no evidence of a third pandemic wave. The attack rate for the week ending Feb 26 was 3.3 cases per 10,000 students, down 20% from the previous week. Southeast and Gulf Coast schools showed slight increases in disease activity, with levels still lower than November's.

Pandemic waning in China – The country's H1N1 pandemic has passed its peak. The proportion of H1N1 among all flu cases dropped from 36.6% in January to 11.1% in February. 793 Chinese have died of the illness, including 18 in February. Officials estimated that 30% of the population has immunity to the virus and said a major new wave of cases is unlikely in the near term, but added that localized outbreaks in crowded settings remain possible.

One H1N1 clade pushed out others – A genetic study of pandemic H1N1 viruses suggests that several H1N1 clades circulated early in the epidemic but that one clade (clade 7) replaced the others and has predominated through most of the pandemic. The authors concluded, however, that it's not clear whether the shift to a single-clade pattern had a clinical impact or gave the virus a transmissibility advantage.

RECALLS & ALERTS:

Castella Imports of Hauppauge, NY, is recalling Castella Chicken Soup Base because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

T. Marzetti Company
is recalling certain production codes of T. Marzetti Veggie Dips, Oak Lake Chip Dips and Great Value Chip Dips because an ingredient used in the product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Heartland Foods, Inc. of Indianapolis is recalling all sizes/containers of COARSE GROUND BLACK PEPPER as these products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Reser's Fine Foods, Inc. of Beaverton, OR has been notified by a supplier that certain seasoning ingredients it supplied to Reser's contain hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) that may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Earth Island
is conducting a recall on its distribution of Follow Your Heart brand products as a precautionary measure due to possible Salmonella contamination of a natural flavor from one of our suppliers.

Homemade Gourmet of Canton, Texas is voluntarily recalling approximately 320 packages of 1.96 oz Tortilla Soup Mix, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein – U.S. food regulators announced a voluntary recall on Thursday of food made with a common flavoring that could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria but did not estimate how broad the recall will be. The flavoring — hydrolyzed vegetable protein — is used in soups, sauces, hot dogs, snack foods, dressings and dips and is made by privately held Basic Food Flavors Inc of Las Vegas, Nevada. "At this time there are no known illnesses associated with this contamination and obviously we'd like to keep it that way. The manufacturer had many first-level consignees who obviously had individuals who had firms that they sold to who sold to the other firms. We expect this to get larger over the next several days, actually several weeks." Since 2006, the U.S. food supply has been battered by a series of high-profile food borne outbreaks involving meat, lettuce, peppers, peanuts and spinach. This week it was reported that food poisoning costs the United States $152 billion in health-related expenses each year.

HVP is a flavor booster made from legumes that is used in a manner similar to monosodium glutamate. Potentially thousands of food products are at risk of being recalled. So far, recalls have been announced for 56 separate products, including potato chips, dips, salad dressing, sauce mixes, soup bases, and 16 flavors of prepackaged meals, including tofu, burritos and pasta. But that number is expected to grow enormously over the next few weeks as details of the recall filter through the complex channels of industrial food production. The 6-page list of recalled lots of HVP posted on Basic Food Flavors' website contains hundreds of items. Many of the products to which the HVP was added may have undergone a "kill step" as they continued to be processed, usually heating to the point that any bacteria would be killed. "Most Americans would be stunned to learn that FDA doesn't even have the authority to make recalls like these mandatory…[the contamination is] "yet more proof that the Food and Drug Administration needs more authority, more inspectors, and more resources to ensure that our food supply is safe."

Signs in False Shepherds & False Religion
For among them are those who worm their way into households and capture idle women burdened down with sins, led along by a variety of passions, always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so these also resist the truth, men who are corrupt in mind, worthless in regard to the faith. But they will not make further progress, for their lack of understanding will be clear to all, as theirs was also. 2 Timothy 3:6-9

Trivandrum, Kerala

India's southern state of Kerala may have hosted the largest gathering of women ever seen on the planet.

Clad in traditional Kerala saris and bearing offerings of food, more than two million women – perhaps more – thronged the state capital Trivandrum on Sunday.

The women braved searing heat to offer a special meal at the Attukal temple to Hindu goddess Bhagavathy – one incarnation of the potent goddesses Kali and Saraswati.
